- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Billy Spargo -- The Title Says It All : John Spargo, born today in Stithians, Cornwall, England, began working in a tin mine part time at the age of 10. By 14, he was working full time in a foundry. When he came to America, he saw the same practice alive and well in the coal mines and the sweatshops. This book, along with the photographs being circulated at the same time, effectively began the crusade to abolish child labor in the US. It is NOT a novel but a vivid portrayal of the darkest hour in this country's labor history. Since child labor still exists in many countries, this book is as important today as it was in 1906. Spargo was a British granite cutter who became a union organizer and socialist and gained his formal education through extension courses at Oxford and Cambridge. Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "The Cry of the Children" is a passionate indictment of child labor in 19th-century industrial England. First published in 1843 and later revised multiple times, the poem captures the immorality of exploiting children as workers, and condemns both the people and societal institutions that uphold child labor as a practice.
